The Ultimate Boss Lady: Mary Louise Riser

October 16th is National Boss’s Day in the United States. We want to honor those bosses throughout the country. We celebrate their fairness, dedication and hard work they put into their businesses every day. In today’s blog post, we are shining the spotlight on the ultimate boss, our very own Mary Louise Riser, owner of New York, New York Hair Salon and Day Spa.

 

 

Mary Louise starting working in the beauty industry at just fifteen year old. Her passion for cosmetology and making women feel beautiful, transformed into an incredible career. With a vision in mind, New York New York Hair Salon and Day Spa was born in 1987 with one goal in mind – to create memorable guest experiences from talented professionals in a relaxing atmosphere. To say that objective has been met would be an understatement. NY NY has been consistently voted as the Best of Frederick for 23 years.

It’s no secret as to why the salon has been so successful – Mary Louise has spent the last 33 years dedicating her life to her clients, employees and the community of Frederick. She has shaped and built an iconic regional company in Frederick County. Today, we asked her advice on what business means to her:

Q: What sets your business apart from other salons in the area?
A: Everything we do is targeted toward creating the perfect guest experience. We want them to have a relaxing day; it’s their special time to just relax and enjoy.

Q: What are you passionate about?
A: My passion is to make sure that everyone who works for me can be successful and self reliant. I want them to be happy and love each day they are here.

Q: What advice would you give to women wanting to start their own business?
A: I want them to make sure they understand how hard it is. Be ready to give up your life for the business – although rewarding, it’s a big sacrifice.

Q: What is your favorite part about owning a salon and day spa?
A: Watching every employee be their best and seeing everyone have a great time.

Q: Who inspires you?
A: Other women. I Enjoy talking to good, hardworking people that understand what it takes to be successful.

Q: What has been the best advice someone has given you?
A: Believe in yourself. Know your worth. Know yourself. Know what you’re capable of.

“Go get what you want, be prepared to work hard for it and stay with it. Make it work, look back and be PROUD of what you have done. Don’t waste your time and give your heart to the right people. I love this business; it truly gives me so much love and happiness. Since I was fifteen years old, everything I did was preparing me for this journey God has sent me on.
